I am living inside germany also imported the device from the usa (bass pro). SPOT Personal Tracker took unfortunately 8 weeks since the german customs was holding it back. I am running the device at present because of 2 weeks. The activation across the spot web situation worked fine. Foreign addresses also credit cards are accepted.
The device works without any problems inside germany.
Beside the messaging (included inside the basic subscription because of $99.99/year) i also use the tracking service (additional $49.99/year toward the basic subscription). The tracking need be re-activated every 24h through pressing the ok button because of 5 seconds. Every 10 minutes the current position is sent toward the satellite. This position is very accurate (within a few meters accuracy). In your account (on the spot web site) you canful get at the messages also the tracking data while kml file (google tracking format) also also display the positions inside google maps also google earth. So faraway i like the device very much. In the next months i resolution use it upon my wilderness trips.
Tip because of how toward publish the tracking data upon your own home page: the tracking data is offered through the account that is password protected. I don’t want other people accessing my account. If you have a running pc with network (e.g. Permanent dsl) then you canful use a webtool (e.g. Imacros because of firefox) because of polling regularly the kml file from the account (be responsible because of doing it not too frequently). After that the kml file canful be copied across toward your home page (e.g. Write a small script that uses ftp). Then link it with google maps (see http://maps.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=41136 because of instructions). So anyone visiting your home page canful lookout your continue tracking positions inside google maps (use it e.g. When you are upon vacation). Alternatively someone canful define a so called “network link” inside google earth that rhythmically reads this kml file from your home page.
Tip because of the introductory activation: if you enter the esn (equipment serial number) upon the spot web situation because of the introductory activation, then include the ‘-’ character. Otherwise you get a misleading error letter that the device is already inside use.
